Trichomoniasis
Treatments

How is trichomoniasis treated?

Most likely, you'll need prescription medication to treat trichomoniasis and your doctor may prescribe metronidazole tablets or a related drug called tinidazole.  If you are allergic to these medications, a topical medicine can be used but it will most likely be less effective.  While it may not cure you, the topical medicines will probably ease your symptoms.

To determine if you have trichomoniasis, your doctor will do a pelvic exam and lab test. During the pelvic exam, your doctor will look for small red sores inside the vagina or on the cervix.  Your doctor will also take a fluid sample from the vagina and look for the parasite under a microscope or send the sample to a lab.

All women and men who are diagnosed with trichomoniasis should be treated. It can be passed onto others - even without any symptoms.

Unfortunately, we do not feel there are any at-home treatments that are truly effective in treating trichomoniasis.

People being treated for trichomoniasis should avoid sex until they and their sex partners complete treatment and have no symptoms. Having trichomoniasis once does not protect a person from getting it again.
