Prevention

You can help prevent            vaginitis from recurring         by following some
    simple behaviors that
will minimize the risk             factors associated
    with vaginitis.

  • Practice good hygiene by keeping the vaginal area clean, using a mild soap, and drying the vaginal area well.
    • Wipe from front to back after using the toilet.  Doing so will help halt the spread of fecal bacterial to the vaginal area.
    • Avoid irritating agents such as harsh soaps, scented shower gels, feminine hygiene sprays, and scented tampons and pads.
    • Don't douche. Your vagina doesn't require cleansing other than normal bathing. Repetitive douching disrupts the normal organisms that live in the vagina and may actually increase your risk of vaginal infection. Douching will not clear up a vaginal infection.
    • Avoid tight jeans, spandex, and other clothing that can trap moisture.  Limit time spent in workout clothes and bathing suits.
    • Wear cotton underwear and pantyhose with a cotton crotch. Don't wear underwear to bed.
    • Practice abstinence or safe sex and avoid multiple partners. Latex condoms, when used consistently and correctly, can reduce the risk of transmission of a sexually transmitted disease.
    • Eat yogurt that contains active lactobacillus cultures. This may help reduce recurrent vaginal yeast infections. Lactobacillus is a type of "good" bacteria that's common in your vagina.
